Should I Purchase a Maintenance Plan for My Swimming Pool Heat Pump?

A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to spend two days on the road with one of our service technicians. Now, I’ve always known that AquaCal’s heat pumps have always been recognized as a top quality brand with a history of solid performance and longevity. Because of AquaCal’s reputation, most new owners question whether they should purchase an additional maintenance plan for their unit. My experience in the field with our technician settled the question in my mind: yes, purchasing a maintenance plan is definitely a good idea. Let me tell you why.

We’ve Got a Plan…

During the time I spent with the service technician making service calls, we encountered a number of heat pumps that had become to home of unwanted guests—mostly rodents. These critters can wreak havoc on a system by chewing through wires, damaging electrical controls, and generally just making a mess of things. However, the pool owners we visited did not need to worry about the repair costs because their heat pumps were covered by either a service plan or a maintenance plan. The technician quickly repaired the damage and restored the units to service.

Although I saw first-hand how rats, squirrels, and other wildlife can damage heat pumps, mechanical and electrical problems also occur. As the following check list shows, the AquaCal heat pump maintenance plan ensures that all major components receive a complete inspection:

Annual Maintenance & Safety Check Points:

  • Clean Evaporator Coil
  • Check Relay Contacts
  • Check Capacitor Values
  • Clean Heat Pump Cabinet
  • Check Flow/Pressure Switch
  • Check Fan Blade Clearances
  • Oil Fan Motor (As Applicable)
  • Verify/Check Air Flow Delta
  • Verify/Check Water Flow Delta
  • Check Fan Motor Amperage Draw
  • Check & Clean Condensate Drains
  • Check Pool & Spa Water Chemistry
  • Check Compressor Amperage Draw
  • Check Internal Electrical Connections
  • Check Operating Refrigerant Pressures (as applicable)
  • Check and Calibrate Operating Controls
  • Check Proper Line & Control Voltage to Unit
  • Check Operating Super/Sub-Cooling Heat Reading
  • Environmental conditions of concern: run off, sprinklers, etc.
  • Perform Operating Orientation (As Needed)

Just as you should have annual service performed on your home air conditioning system, regular inspection and maintenance of your AquaCal heat pump will ensure that it provides many years of reliable, efficient service. An AquaCal maintenance plan helps identify potential problems before they become serious, protecting your investment and extending the life of your unit.

Free Upgrades

As an added bonus, when you purchase an AquaCal maintenance plan, we upgrade your system components when needed at no additional cost to you. By keeping your unit updated with the latest state-of-the-art parts, we ensure that your unit will continue to perform as good as new—or better—for many years to come. It costs us more to keep your unit updated, but it’s just one example of how AquaCal goes the extra mile for our customers.

So, is it a good idea to purchase this plan? You bet! You’ve bought the highest quality heat pump available, why not protect it with the best maintenance plan in the industry?
